Crisis Intervention Training for law enforcement officers set for Sept. 24-27

Mobile Mental Health and the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation are co-sponsoring Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for Mobile law enforcement beginning Monday, Sept. 24 and ending Thursday, Sept. 27.

“A shooting in Mobile this past June highlighted how difficult it is for law enforcement officers to deal with the mentally ill in a potentially violent setting,” Tuerk Schlesinger, CEO of Mobile Mental Health, said. “Our goal with this training is to help law enforcement better prepare for incidents like these.”

CIT officer safety training provides a basic understanding of mental illness and offers tactics and techniques proven to de-escalate situations involving individuals in a serious mental health crisis. Training will include PowerPoint presentations, videos and role—laying demonstrations. (Schedule attached)

CIT trainers will include Officer Frank Webb of the Houston Police Department, who holds a master’s of education and is a trainer with the department. Henry Stough, Montgomery, is a certified licensed and professional counselor that specializing in counseling, assessment, intervention, and education. (Résumés are available on request)

At least 14 officers from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Mobile Police Department will participate.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Department Administrative Building on 510 S. Royal Street is the site of the training, which is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24 through Sept. 27. For more details about the training, please call 422-5220 to contact Kathy McMaken, assistant director of education at Mobile Mental Health, coordinator for the training.
